Month of Sacred Conversations Ends with Worship and Celebration

INDIANAPOLIS — A celebration and worship service was held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June
29, at Light of the World Christian Church to end month-long Sacred Conversations on Religion, Race and Electoral Politics sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis.

During the month of June, conversations were held between church pairings, Christian
Theological Seminary and business and religious leaders. There were six church pairings, each
pair consisting of a predominately Anglo and predominately African-American church.

The evening opened with a welcome by Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin, Senior Pastor, Light of the World Christian Church. Bishop Benjamin said, “When these conversations are over, we still have to live in Indianapolis and America. It is important to recognize that we are making
changes inch by inch and mile by mile. It is a necessary part of the American dream, and central to living the Gospel of Christ, that we learn to live together.”

Each church pairing spoke to the group about the lessons learned and discoveries made during the month-long conversations. Most referred to new friendships, newfound similarities and a greater appreciation of the obstacles and stereotypes facing us all.

A representative from each pairing was selected to serve on a task force to continue and
expand the successes of these discussions. The first meeting of the task force will be held on Monday, July 21 at 5 p.m.

This local event was part of a national effort to address race relations. For more information
