Remembering Victims of Violent Homicide & Promoting Peacemaking The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis held a Peace & Reconciliation Worship Service for the survivors of victims of homicide on Sunday,July 8, 2007at 3pm at the Greater Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, 3516 East 39th Street, Indianapolis.About 20 families attended, as well as other community and civic leaders. Trained volunteer mentorsoffered support and comforted survivors. A reception followed the service. Since January 1996, more than 1,264 prayer vigils have beenconducted at the sites of Indianapolis homicides and 20 memorial services were held to provide spiritual support to the families and friends of those victims. Indianapolis has had 112 violent deaths due to homicidefrom August 1, 2006to May 31, 2007. Already this year, The Church Federation has held nearly 61 prayer vigils ahomicide sites, reclaiming and consecrating the ground for God.The program has been copied in other cities in theUnited States. During the service, the names of homicide victimsare read as family members come forward to light a candle in remembrance of their loved one.
